At The Site Group, we’re redefining residential landscaping by blending plant expertise with an unparalleled commitment to understanding each client’s unique environment. We interviewed our residential landscape designer, Sarena, about The Site Group’s innovative approach to planting and softscape design sets us apart from other landscapers.

See how our Dayton, Ohio landscapers design gardens that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and tailored to thrive in their specific conditions.

Residential Landscape Designers with Plant Expertise

The Site Group team has extensive plant knowledge, enabling us to make precise recommendations on plant selection and placement. This deep understanding allows us to determine the ideal proximity between plants to ensure healthy growth.

Recently, we’ve brought on board Sarena whose vast experience as a residential landscape designer has elevated our ability to provide an even higher level of service. Part of what makes our planting approach different is being very cognizant of:

  • The natural environment around the client’s land
  • What kinds of pests, animals, etc., are there
  • The level of maintenance the client is willing to do
  • Goals for the garden
  • Any questions or concerns

By considering all of these factors, we’re able to provide a well-rounded, positive experience and design a successful landscape.

Soil Testing and Customized Nutrient Recommendations

Understanding the soil and growing conditions is a key component of our unique planting approach. We perform soil tests for various reasons, such as diagnosing plant issues despite adequate sun and water or addressing problems in soils with high clay content or those that have been disturbed by construction.

For instance, one of our clients faced a situation where nothing was blooming in a particular area in their outdoor living. Upon conducting a soil test, our residential landscape designer, Sarena, discovered that the phosphorus levels were at zero when they should have been around 35%.

Deeper Soil Insights to Promote Growth

This insight allowed us to amend the soil effectively, ensuring the plants could thrive. Our soil tests guide us in recommending the right plants and soil amendments, whether it’s lowering the pH for acid-loving plants like rhododendrons or adding nutrients through cover crops.

Advanced Soil Amendments

To further enhance plant health and growth, The Site Group employs advanced soil amendments like leaf compost, sand, and soil. We also use other amendments, such as vermiculite, perlite, or peat moss, to help adjust the pH, drainage, and water retention depending on the client’s particular plants.

Using Beneficial Mycorrhizal Fungi

One of our advanced practices is the use of mycorrhizal fungi specific to the plant species being planted. For example, certain types of plants like roses, maples, and conifers sometimes need a little help. Putting mycorrhizal fungi into soil boosts root development and overall plant health, ensuring each plant has the best chance to succeed.

Low Maintenance, High Impact Design

We understand that our clients have diverse aesthetics and maintenance preferences. At The Site Group, a low-maintenance yard doesn’t mean sacrificing design, creativity, or plant density.

While every plant requires some level of maintenance, we offer solutions that cater to different maintenance levels without compromising aesthetics. For clients seeking minimal upkeep, we recommend low-maintenance plant materials that align with their vision.

This could be plants like boxwoods, hydrangeas, or anything native that, once established, doesn’t have to be watered or touched. Additionally, our crew can do a seasonal clean-up in the fall or spring to conveniently maintain the client’s desired aesthetic.
